Coming into my fortieth year I started to notice significant changes in my energy level, irregular and dramatically heavier menstrual cycles, I was prone to bloating and PMS, a thing I had never experienced to that point, it was appearing 7+ days before I was due. I also developed a condition whereby I was unable to absorb and store iron through food.
Concern had me heading to my GP, where I was politely told that I was to young too be perimenopausal, that my only option was a hormonal IUD and I needed to eat red meat. Being in the holistic space I work in I was extremely hesitant to use any form of synthetic hormone and as I was already eating red meat along with a background as a nutritionist, I didn't believe that was the underlying issue with my inability to store iron.
So I started to research the effects of oestrogen leaving the body, what age this started to decrease in levels and the health issues you encountered because of this. I have to say there was very little information out there on the subject and I had to employ a host of female wellness practitioners to start to understand what was happening. Oestrogen levels start to reduce in your body from your mid 30's and significantly reduce from your early to late 40's in most women.
There are a host of symptoms that pertain to this, such as abdominal weight gain, lack in energy, anxiety, depression, difficultly sleeping, rise in body temperature, bloating, change in menstrual cycles, including irregular cycles, heavy and increased blood clotting , longer PMS lead up, hot flushes, night sweets, and overall feeling very flat. These symptoms may just be on your peripheral and often put down to our busy and active lifestyles. But they get worse and we are left questioning is this what life is going to be from now on in?
I am here to tell you there is hope, heading towards my fifties I have never felt better and this is purely down to a lifestyle diet, addressing my hormonal changes naturally through supplements, along with exercise, meditation and self care.
